The Role of Principal Supervisors Amidst a Pandemic

Principal supervisors play an important part in supporting principal leadership development. National conferences, new principal supervision standards, and other local efforts have prompted changes to the role to better support principals. The Wallace Foundation’s Principal Supervisor Initiative (PSI) was a four-year effort to redefine principal supervision in six urban school districts. Launched in 2014, the PSI aimed to help these districts transform the principal supervisor position from a role that traditionally focused on managerial tasks to one dedicated to developing and supporting principals to be effective instructional leaders. Principals gave higher ratings to the support they received from their central office after the principal supervisor job was altered to focus on boosting principals’ instructional leadership skills.

Taking these lessons learned from the PSI efforts, learn how principal supervisors are now the critical thread between the central office and principals amidst a national pandemic.
